Spreading the word, tips for better blog promotion.
Once you have written a blog post you particularly like, it is essential that you spread the word of your blog by every means necessary. The predominant force in blog promotion is social media, but dropping a link here and there in other web mediums is advisable to. Once criticism people have of blog promotion via social media, is that it takes "too much time." The trick here is to link as many social media sites together as possible. This will save a lot of time, as a few posts can cover many social networking accounts.
For example, you can connect Facebook to Twitter, Digg, Delicious, and many others. Twitter is also linkable to many other sites to. So once you complete a post in Facebook, all the sites that are linked to Facebook automatically spread the word. It is as simple as that.
If you are unsure about which sites you should sign up for, I would recommend the following. It has to be said though, that any social networking site is worth joining, even if you do not visit them much yourself.
Digg
Delicious

These are not just ways to bring direct attention to your blog, but they also count well for back links, which gives you an SEO bonus to.
Word of mouth is ok, but you never really know if your friends read it because they like you. Or even if they just tell you they do. Feel free to test them for amusement.
Spreading the word is essential for blogging. You could be the next Shakespeare, but no one will know because nobody reads your work. So don't write a lonely blog, spread the word, and enjoy your results. You deserve it.
In the future, I will be experimenting further with linking social media, and how far one post will travel. I will keep you informed.
If you have any thoughts about blog promotion, why not share them?
Freelance writing tips for better web content
I read an interesting article about writing for the web last night, and what I found most interesting was that really the article was in the main, about grammar. The web writing tips were quite few and far between. Here then, is a few of the standard tips for writing for the web.
- Keep sentences and paragraphs short for scan reading
- Ensure accurate spelling and grammar
- Write for your audience and use appropriate language and sentence structure
- Keep content relevant, and succinct
This is all well and good, but these are only guidelines. The bottom line is that if you are writing for a client, and they want in depth descriptions of this that and the other, and that is how you should write the piece. Interestingly, I have recently submitted two articles for consideration with a writing company, who have rejected my application. In hindsight, I feel my article choices were good, just not quite as in depth as they would have liked. Sadly, I have articles I could have submitted which were more to their tastes.
I feel if there is an underlying principle of writing for the web it is this: Give the writing a smooth, flowing style, and it will be far easier for people to read it! Fundamentally, is there anything more important?

Coping with freelance gloom…
It is not a good feeling when you are working hard but seeing little results. This is just one of the many unforeseen experiences I have had to cope with over the last few months. The hours of toil should yield there own reward but this is not always the case, and I have felt like it is all in vein. At least sometimes. The answer as always is just keep your head down and keep plugging away. This is helped by the only other option available to me at the moment, and that is quit. Not one I am comfortable with or planning to follow.
Link-optimise, is getting there, albeit slowly. We have learned a lot about SEO this week, and how it all changed in 2006. As a result we have initialised a link campaign which is progressing fairly quickly. To attract more traffic we are implementing an SEO resources page, and we have discovered the best place to place an ad is Facebook, rather than Google.
Playgameshavefun.com, has had the first bit of content written for it, and I'm just going to keep writing it until we get something up and running. I have a lot of faith and hope on this project, and Phil says he can see the advantages of it to. With Christmas coming, it would be good to have it rocking and rolling by October.
The future is optimistic, but the present is a grind.
Freelance writing and the way to schedule
I read an interesting post on freelancing last night, and re-span it for one of my assignments. It featured freelancing and how to make the best of it. One of the tips involved scheduling and timing. It advised to make a to do list, and fix your hours for writing. So if you decided to work from 9 to 5, you make sure you are washed, fed, dressed and at your desk for 9am. This way, you approach your day with the right mindset.
It also said it was a good idea to make a to-do list, and time how long the tasks have taken you so you can evaluate your performance and gauge your productivity, and to take breaks and make sure you eat something during the day. Research has shown that people that do not take breaks, but just work through do not produce their best work and tend to be inefficient. The article went on to say that multitasking was a waste of time as it just halved your focus, and the best thing to do was to focus on one task at a time.
So my freelance writing schedule has panned out like this tonight.
- Decided to work from 7.30 to 11.30pm. Started at 8 after talking to girlfriend on the phone. Not the best of starts but rescheduled start time to 8pm.
- Made to do list which involved writing 9 articles. This broke down into 2 articles for one client and 2 for another. 5 for the last one
- Had a short break after the first 2 articles, and then a short break after the next one. Finished the 5 articles at 12.15pm. This has proved to be a good night as though I over ran by 15 mins, I completed everything I set out to do.
I feel I will be using this method more often in the future.
Freelance writing tips for a better nights work.
It has been an interesting week for me, both in and out of the writing world. I have discovered that a good nights sleep produces a better night writing, and that is a very valuable lesson I feel. It is hard to write if you are fighting your own tiredness. Also, another valuable freelance tip is to have a schedule, and stick to it. So my schedule tonight looks like this

Edit terms and conditions for Link-optimise.
Write out the above on your note pad-all writers should have one of these, and cross them off or tick them when you do them. You'll get an immense feeling of satisfaction if you do.
So now that number one is done, time to move onto number 2. Bye for now.
